Do you know who Erk is? I'm only asking because I have no clue myself. I don't even know how many he is. When I first met him and he told me about this record he was alone, I think. When he played these songs to me three years later, he was suddenly a lot of people. Not all of them stayed ‘til the end. Many of his voices exulted from the loudspeakers while his many hands worked on drums, basses, mellotrons, organs and pianos to bring these "Northern English Folk Songs" (Elvis Costello) to new life. Only with "She Said She Said" did I realize that he had forgotten something: the guitars! „No“, he said, “that’s part of my philosophy.” I asked him to elaborate. He shrugged and said, "I'm crazy, but I can do the job." And then he sat down at his piano, started playing something by George Gershwin and made me feel like I’d never been born. I know this feeling very well. Maybe it’s stupid to ask artists questions like this but I’ve done it all my life. Just to come up with the answers myself. Years later.

It was much easier this time. After listening to this record a second time I found everything I needed to know – the secret ingredient, the magic formula, the philosophy (if you like) behind these recordings. And now that I know what I feel must be right, I'm here to show everybody the light. It’s one word: Love.
